The Dojo of Okinawan Karate
has been operating in the Grand Rapids area for the last 47 years. The Dojo is a FAMILY martial arts center that offers classes to men women and children of all ages. The Dojo’s program also includes classes in cardio kickboxing, and yoga.


Toby J. Heberly Kyoshi 7th Dan Oyata Shin Shu Ho Ryu

Toby Heberly has been training in the martial arts for over 50 years. His dojo has been operating continuously since 1975. Mr. Heberly trained 6 days a week his first year of training,and has continued this pattern of dedication to the study Okinawan Karate thoughout his martial arts career. Mr. Heberly has continued to train on a daily basis while instructing karate and kobudo. He feels he must continue to build his own karate and kobudo knowledge through consistant training, in order to pass the knowledge on to his students.
In 2004 Mr. Heberly received the greatest honor of his martial arts career. Induction into the “Oyata Shin Shu Ho ryu” family. The “Oyata Shin Shu Ho “ group is a group of close knit, senior students of Taika Oyata that are expected to carry on the future of Taika’s art of
True Life Protection.
Mr Heberly and his family currently reside in the Grandville area.
